Andy Roddick has supported a tennis journalist’s opinion on Jannik Sinner being asked about his doping controversy during a press conference before the 2024 US Open. Sinner, who is ranked World No.1, did not avoid answering reporters’ questions about the controversy, even though the moderator tried to limit follow-up questions on the topic.

The Italian faced intense scrutiny when he and the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) revealed on Tuesday, August 20, that he had tested positive for the banned substance Clostebol twice in March this year.

He was temporarily suspended from playing, but the suspension was quickly lifted after his legal team proved that he had accidentally ingested the substance, rather than intentionally.

A separate panel of judges later found the top-ranked player innocent, believing the proof that he came into contact with the substance while getting a massage from his physiotherapist. The physiotherapist was using a spray with Clostebol to treat a cut on the player’s finger.

Jannik Sinner has split with his coach and physio after some shocking news caused a lot of talk. Many players were upset about what they see as special treatment for the Italian. Sinner went to a press conference before the 2024 US Open, where the person in charge tried to prevent reporters from asking him more questions about the Clostebol incident.

But the current Australian Open champion ignored the moderator’s instructions and confidently responded to several questions about the topic. This led to journalist Jon Wertheim posting on X (previously known as Twitter): ”

  • The suggestion to only ask tennis-related questions at the US Open was seen as a funny moment in the sport’s history. Sinner deserves praise for understanding how silly the request was and for handling all questions calmly and professionally.

Andy Roddick then went on the platform and supported Wertheim’s opinion. The 2003 US Open champion stated that Jannik Sinner is responsible for the controversial situation and should be prepared to answer questions about it when asked. The 41-year-old also expressed his belief that if the Italian had avoided the questions, he would have appeared “weak”.

Up to now, Andy Roddick has supported the independent tribunal’s choice to allow Jannik Sinner to keep playing, and rejected rumors that claim the Italian received special treatment from the authorities because of his status in tennis.

Many people in the tennis community still criticize Jannik Sinner. Critics of the Italian believe he should have faced a longer suspension even though his use of the banned substance was accidental. Some current players, like Denis Shapovalov and Nick Kyrgios, have also criticized the authorities for allowing the Italian to continue playing.

However, some people have criticized the World No.1 based on wrong information.
Many questioned why it took so long for Jannik Sinner and the ITIA to share the updates in August, even though the tests and reports were from March-April.

The reason for the delay was the rules that required the developments to be kept private until the independent tribunal made a final decision. Roddick recently advised critics to consider the “facts” before judging Sinner and to be mindful of the harm caused to the Italian’s reputation by spreading misinformation.

  • In a recent episode of the Served With Andy Roddick podcast, Roddick emphasized the importance of facts over feelings in the situation. He stated that he would provide information for people to make judgments, but ultimately it is up to them to decide how they feel.
Roddick also encouraged listeners to consider the perspective of individuals facing negative publicity and to allow for the full story to be revealed before passing judgment.

Jannik Sinner will begin his 2024 US Open journey by playing against Mackenzie McDonald on Tuesday, August 27. If he wins the first match, he will then compete against either Eliot Spizzirri or Alex Michelsen in the second round.
