Lashlee, 41, took over as head coach of the Mustangs in 2022 after previously serving as SMU’s offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2019. In just his second year as head coach, Lashlee led SMU to an 11–3 record in 2023 and a conference championship—the program’s first since 1984.
The 2024 season has seen further success, with SMU making a strong debut in the ACC. Under Lashlee’s guidance, the Mustangs entered the national rankings and remain contenders for a conference title and potential College Football Playoff berth.
In a statement, Lashlee expressed gratitude to the university and reaffirmed his commitment to the program.
“My family and I are proud to be part of SMU,” he said. “This community has embraced us, and I’m excited for what we’re building here. We still have more work to do, and I’m looking forward to what’s ahead.”
The extension comes at a crucial time for SMU. As the university transitions into the ACC, consistent leadership is expected to play a key role in the program’s stability, recruitment, and national profile.
The Mustangs have already seen improvements in recruiting, particularly within Texas, and the administration believes that Lashlee is the right person to guide the team through this new era.
The football program’s success under Lashlee has also drawn increased support from alumni, fans, and donors, positioning SMU as a rising program on the national stage.
With the new contract in place, SMU and Lashlee aim to maintain momentum and continue competing at the highest level in college football.
