Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran has been handed a two-game suspension without pay by MLB following an incident in which he used an anti-LGBTQ slur against a fan. The altercation occurred during the Red Sox’s 10-2 defeat to the Houston Astros on Sunday at Fenway Park.
According to MLB, Jarren Duran’s salary for the suspended games will be donated to PFLAG, an organization focused on supporting and advocating for LGBTQ+ individuals and their families. The native of Corona, California will serve his suspension on Monday and Tuesday, during the first two games of Boston’s three-game series against the Texas Rangers.
In his fourth year with the Red Sox, Jarren Duran, an All-Star who leads the American League in doubles and all of baseball in triples this season, has apologized after using a slur during the game. He expressed regret in a postgame statement, acknowledging the offense caused and apologizing to the Red Sox organization and the LGBTQ community. Duran emphasized his commitment to using this experience to educate himself and his teammates and to improve as a role model.
