New York Attorney General Letitia James Tries to Block Subpoenas from Trump Administration
New York Attorney General Letitia James has taken legal action to stop the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) from enforcing two subpoenas related to her investigations of former President Donald Trump and the National Rifle Association (NRA).
The subpoenas were issued by Acting U.S. Attorney John Sarcone III from the Northern District of New York. They request documents from James’s office connected to civil lawsuits she filed against Trump and the NRA. One of her lawsuits led to a $350 million judgment against Trump for financial fraud.
James filed a motion in court arguing that the subpoenas should be blocked. She claims that Sarcone no longer has the legal authority to act as U.S. Attorney because he was never confirmed by the Senate and has served in the role beyond the 120-day limit allowed for temporary appointments.
She also says the subpoenas are politically motivated. According to James, the Trump administration is using the Justice Department to retaliate against her for holding Trump accountable in court.
