It’s safe to say that Red Devils supporters have a bit too much to choose from when it comes to selecting Manchester United’s most legendary player of all time.
There’s no lack of contenders, ranging from George Best to Sir Bobby Charlton, Wayne Rooney to Eric Cantona, Ryan Giggs to Bryan Robson.
However, the decision becomes much simpler when you rank the best football players to have ever worn the sky blue shirt of Napoli.
Diego Armando Maradona has left an incredible legacy that can never be surpassed, surpassing all those who came before and after him.
Marek Hamsik, however, goes far closer than most.
Hamsik, who was once the captain of the Partenopei, is regarded as one of the greatest Neopolitan players of all time. He made the most appearances for the team (520), was briefly the highest goalscorer until Dries Mertens passed him in 2020.
Scott McTominay, a former Manchester United midfielder, must therefore feel as though he has arrived at the gates of heaven and been hailed by God himself when Hamsik greets him warmly at the Stadio Diego Maradona.
Legend greets Scott McTominay following Manchester United’s departure.
The eight-time Slovakia Player of the Year thinks McTominay, who was called a “great” addition, might be his replacement in sky blue.
When it comes to pure, innate talent, McTominay may not quite measure up to Hamsik.
McTominay, though, has made 17 appearances for both club and country since the beginning of the previous campaign, making him perhaps Napoli’s best midfield scoring threat since Hamsik’s prime.
According to the magician with a mohawk, Corriere dello Sport, “McTominay could be my heir.” Like myself, he is an attacking midfielder who enjoys getting involved and scoring goals.
“We’ll see (how he performs). The formation determines this. But his name is well-known. He demonstrated that when playing for United and the national team.
In a perfect world, Erik ten Hag would have liked to keep McTominay’s unusual ability to smash boxes. After all, the Carrington alumnus saved his boss multiple times last term.
However, with McTominay’s contract set to expire in 2025 and United offering the chance to resolve their difficulties with profit and sustainability by selling a homegrown player for a “pure profit” of £25 million, the Red Devils were unable to reject Napoli’s offer.
“He played a crucial role for our team. His tenure at Manchester United surpassed two decades. Sadly, though, they are the rules,” Ten Hag stated during a press conference.
“To conduct sales, you must talk about the regulations, and it goes without saying that homegrown and academy players add greater value. Although it’s not the right thing to do, it makes sense for all parties involved.
For his part, Scott is content. For Napoli, of course. They’re getting a really talented player.
A trip to Cagliari this weekend might mark McTominay’s debut for Napoli, who are expected to contend for the Scudetto once more.
Napoli, now led by former Chelsea, Italy, and Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte, are looking to recover from a title defense that was so terrible that it nearly made David Moyes’ dismal time in the United dugout appear successful.
