Despite having to make a change due to injury, the Florida Gators have already made significant changes following their season-opening defeat.

Head coach Billy Napier said on Wednesday that senior quarterback Graham Mertz will not play in the team’s next game against FCS Samford because of a concussion. Thus, DJ Lagway, a five-star true freshman, will make his debut in the professional arena.

It’s evident that DJ has a fantastic mindset. Through Jacob Rudner of 247Sports, Napier said, “He’s excited, got a chance to play Saturday for the first time in his career.” “Just to hear opinions on that and get a better understanding of what it’s like to be a rival. Everything is going OK so far.

At least not yet. The Gators had no intention of making this adjustment. Still, it will most likely thrill Floridians. Mertz did not appear to be in position to make a big improvement in 2024 while starting for a Florida club that finished 5-7 the previous season. On the other hand, Lagway, a five-star recruit, was considered the best prep quarterback available in the 2024 class. Although he is still a true freshman and very young, Gator supporters are desperate for some improvement following a 41-17 drubbing at the hands of Miami.

Napier is facing mounting pressure in his role as Florida’s coach. For Lagway to alleviate some of it, it must be excellent.
