The Colts receiver was called a “defenseless player” resulting in the Steelers safety’s penalty.
Pittsburgh Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick was called for a costly unnecessary roughness penalty during the third quarter of the team’s 27–24 loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. Fitzpatrick was running full speed towards Colts receiver Adonai Mitchell as the pass from quarterback Joe Flacco was incomplete. It happened all so fast, as many plays in football do, but Fitzpatrick was still able to not lead with his head as he ended up colliding with Mitchell.
Even still, the referees continued to call needless roughness, citing Mitchell’s lack of defense. Fitzpatrick seemed very irate over this penalty in an interview that took place after the game.
Fitzpatrick remarked, “I thought we were playing football.” “At this point, I have no idea what we’re playing. Very different game from the one I loved and played as a child. Not allowed to punch somebody hard or act violently. Thus, I’m not sure. I’m at a loss for words at this point.
“They claimed that I struck the vulnerable player in the head. How he may be helpless eludes me. I’m going to play him or the ball if he’s chasing after it. The fact that he abruptly lowers his arms shouldn’t result in punishment. Didn’t even strike him in the head. But as I mentioned, you struck someone hard, and now they’re raising red flags.
Yeah, it shouldn’t matter, because I have every single right to go for the ball,” stated Fitzpatrick. “There shouldn’t be a punishment if I don’t clean him and stick my head into his brain. Although I’m not really sure how we’re supposed to play anymore, I’m free to go after the ball, just as he is.
The Colts finally drove for a score after receiving a new set of downs as a result of the penalty. The Colts now lead the Steelers 24–10 as a result.
