Tennis legend Ion Tiriac believes that Carlos Alcaraz is gaining a lot of attention for his off-court career at a young age.

Former tennis player turned billionaire businessman Ion Tiriac has recommended to Carlos Alcaraz to reduce the number of sponsorship deals he takes on. Tiriac had a successful career playing tennis, participating in all of the major tournaments and even winning the French Open men’s doubles in 1970.

However, it is his activities after retiring from tennis that have changed the life of the 85-year-old Romanian. He has guided numerous players, such as serving as Boris Becker’s agent, leading his country’s Olympic and Sports Committee, and organizing tennis tournaments in Europe, notably the Madrid Open.

When working with a young Becker, Tiriac reduced his sponsorships and encouraged him to only make deals with a few select brands, which led to the German’s successful career. He thinks that Alcaraz, who is 21 years old, could benefit from similar guidance.

In an interview with We Love Tennis, he suggested that the Spaniard could make more money by thinking long-term because he is currently getting too much exposure.
Tiriac praised Alcaraz as a talented and sensational player with amazing speed and power in his legs.

I believe they are showing him too much in the media. They are trying to make money off him even though he is just starting out.
It is important to be patient and let him develop because the money they are making now is nothing compared to what they could make in the future.

Alcaraz is currently the highest-paid tennis player in the world, making around $45 million (£34.6m) between June 2023 and June 2024. His prize money is only a third of that amount, with double the amount coming from endorsements.

He signed a new, highly profitable 10-year contract with Nike earlier this year, totaling £160m. Babolat, the company that makes his tennis rackets, has been his partner for the longest time, signing him when he was just 13.

It is believed that he got his first sponsorship even earlier, at the age of 10.
In addition to Nike and Babolat, he also has partnerships with LVMH, Rolex, BMW, Calvin Klein, ElPozo, and ISDIN sunscreen. Recently, Alcaraz has faced some challenges on the court.

After losing in the Olympic final to Novak Djokovic, he suffered a first-round defeat to Gael Monfils in the Cincinnati Open, leading to a rare outburst where he smashed his racket in frustration. He signed a new, highly profitable 10-year contract with Nike earlier this year, totaling £160m.
