Novak Djokovic has stated that moving forward, he will focus mainly on Grand Slam events and playing for his country in international competitions. He shared this decision during the 2024 Davis Cup Finals.

In 2024, at the Paris Olympics, Djokovic achieved his final career goal by winning his first gold medal in men’s singles. This victory completed his Career Golden Slam and made him the only man to win all the major titles in tennis, including four Grand Slams, all Masters 1000s, and an Olympics gold.

Right now, Djokovic is in Belgrade participating in the Davis Cup Finals, where he started off strong with a smooth 6-0, 6-1 win over Ioannis Xilas of Greece on Saturday, September 14.

After the game, the ex-top-ranked player talked about his future plans, saying he won’t worry about his ranking, playing in smaller tournaments, or trying to qualify for the 2024 ATP Finals.

  • “I am not trying to get a spot on the ATP ranking or the Final Masters. Those are not my main goals, to be honest. I ended my career in different tournaments. I’m not sure if I will compete in them again in the future or this year,” Djokovic said to the press.

Now, his main focus will be on winning Grand Slams and representing his country in events such as the Davis Cup. He mentioned that he will take a break to rest and recuperate before choosing his next competition.

  • “I prioritize playing for the national team and competing in grand slams above everything else. Right now, I need to take a break to rest physically, mentally, and emotionally before deciding on my next steps, including how much to play and where to compete,” he said.

Novak Djokovic needs to play a lot of matches for the rest of the 2024 ATP Tour if he wants to make it to the ATP Finals. Right now, he is in ninth place on the list and needs to get into the top eight to qualify automatically.

He hasn’t won any titles this year, and he was knocked out in the semifinals at the Australian Open and lost some important matches at the Indian Wells Masters and the Italian Open.

Djokovic surprised everyone by playing in the ATP 250 event in Geneva, but he lost in the semifinals. He made it to the quarterfinals at the French Open and finished as the runner-up at Wimbledon for the second year in a row.

He did manage to win the Olympics, which was an ITF tournament, but then he got knocked out in the third round of the US Open. Now he is ranked as World No.4 in the ATP Ranking and needs to defend his titles at the Paris Masters and the ATP Finals to avoid dropping even further in the rankings.
