The 24-time Grand Slam champion paired up with his former rival at the end of last season in what was Murray’s first coaching role. Their partnership started off on a positive note with Djokovic reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open before retiring and then the final of the Miami Masters. However, a substandard start to the clay swing saw a duo of early exits in Monte Carlo and Madrid. It was shortly after this that the coaching collaboration came to an end.

Speaking to reporters at the French Open, Djokovic explained both him and Murray reached a mutual agreement to stop working together.

The duo reunited on Sunday in Paris when they took part in Rafael Nadal’s French Open tribute ceremony. Also in attendance and taking part was Roger Federer. Shedding some light on their conversation, Djokovic said Murray joked about his recent triumph at the Geneva Open where he won his 100th ATP title. Joining Federer and Jimmy Connors as the only players to do so.

“He congratulated me and said ‘Now that you have a proper coach, you’re winning tournaments,’” Djokovic said of his conversation with Murray.
“Andy is just an amazing person. Someone that I have spent most of my career with since a very young age on the Tour, traveling, playing him, facing him in the earliest days under 12 and all the way through to the last days of his career. For him to join my team and for us to give a shot to this player/coach relationship was really an incredible thing for tennis and for both of us.” He added.

As for the possibility of claiming his 25th Grand Slam trophy at the French Open, Djokovic didn’t label it as a goal of his. Although he said he ‘still has high objectives.’

“After the Geneva title, I feel more confident,” he told the media in French.
“I feel more positive about my level of play because I had a lot of concerns regarding my game play.
“I feel better, I still have a lot of ambitions, I still have high objectives. I will focus on the first round, and I would like to maintain this high level, this dedication hopefully to reach the best possible result.”
