When Adam Schefter appeared on the Pat McAfee show, he discussed Brandon Aiyuk, the 49ers, and his most recent TikTok video with Jayden Daniels.
Schefter stated to Mcafee after being asked about Aiyuk’s “they don’t want me” statement. “Well, I think what happened here. Let me state for the record that the 49ers absolutely DO want Brandon Aiyuk back despite what he says, but they don’t want him back as he thinks at the price that he is seeking. That is where the breakdown occurs at this point in time.” Schefter went on to explain that the 49ers were close at one point, but the wide receiver market surged and referenced Jaylen Waddle’s signing particularly as a hiccup in the road. For the former ASU receiver, A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith’s contract were both highlighted as significant events.
The discussions about an Aiyuk trade went “nowhere,” according to the ESPN insider, despite the fact that teams have called the team and asked questions. Any trade talk surrounding Aiyuk was never serious.
It appears that there is a difference in what the 49ers are willing to pay Aiyuk and what his team believes the receiver is worth. Schefter continued by stating that the 49ers may receive a franchise tag after Aiyuk’s fifth season. The value of Aiyuk’s franchise tag would be $22 million. Another reason the 49ers wouldn’t part with Aiyuk is their pursuit of the Super Bowl, especially given their leverage. Schefter restated that the real action will start during training camp. Re-signing players by the 49ers typically happens just before training camp, or in Nick Bosa’s case, immediately before Week 1.
