Haason Reddick, a pass-rusher with the New York Jets, has chosen to stick up when the regular season starts by refusing to sign a new deal over the offseason.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Reddick will not participate in the Jets’ season-opening game against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night. Reddick will lose his around $800,000 game check if he chooses not to play. Due to his absence from required workouts throughout the offseason, he has already been fined more than $5 million.
In the last year of his deal, Reddick was supposed to earn $14 million this season; however, the longer he held out, the less money he will get. In March, Reddick was acquired by the Jets from the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a conditional third-round draft pick. Reddick, 29, reportedly gave the team assurances regarding his contract status.
Reddick has since made the decision that he would not play without a new contract, for whatever reason. The Jets have stated they are eager for Reddick to return but have adopted a tough position in talks.
The Arizona Cardinals selected Reddick with the 13th overall pick in 2017. Before the 2022 season, the Eagles signed him, and he was successful while playing for Philadelphia. Over the previous two seasons, Reddick amassed 27 sacks in 34 contests. He was expected to have a big effect with the Jets after making the Pro Bowl both seasons, but that won’t happen unless he accepts to play.
