The singer who has won five Grammy awards sang at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Friday.

Celine Dion made a successful comeback to performing at the Olympic Games Opening Ceremonies on Friday.

She wore a beautiful Dior gown with lots of pearls and embroidery, and sang Edith Piaf’s “L’Hymne à l’amour” at the Eiffel Tower. This was her first show since she revealed in December 2022 that she has a rare and incurable neurological condition called stiff-person syndrome.

The performance that everyone was looking forward to was also very emotional. Earlier in the day, a cabdriver in France said, “Everyone will – how can I put it? ” before searching for the translation of “s’évanouir,” which means “faint.”

No one fainted, but Dion’s performance received loud applause and left some broadcasters, like Kelly Clarkson, speechless with tears of joy.

Dion, known for songs like “My Heart Will Go On” and “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now,” had to cancel her Courage world tour in May 2023 to get treatment.

According to The Washington Post, the long-term condition makes muscles stiff and causes strong muscle spasms in the body’s trunk and limbs. It can affect how a person stands, their balance, and how they use their muscles. In rare cases, it may affect breathing or swallowing muscles, but it typically does not affect how long someone lives.

Earlier this week, the five-time Grammy winner came to France and said hello to fans. There were rumors that she might perform at the Olympics Opening Ceremonies. In an interview with Vogue France in April, Dion suggested that she might make a comeback: “I am working hard with a medical team to give my best. I want to be in top shape. My dream is to visit the Eiffel Tower again!”

After being diagnosed, Dion has only attended a few award shows and red carpet events. At the Grammys this year, she got a standing ovation when she gave Taylor Swift the album of the year award. Some people on the internet claimed Swift ignored Dion when receiving the award, but they later took a picture hugging backstage.

In June, Dion went to the New York City premiere of her documentary “I Am: Celine Dion,” which talked about her life and diagnosis. One emotional moment was when she had a seizure. The documentary also revealed Dion having difficulty singing in a recording studio.

Friday’s performance was not Dion’s first at the Olympics. She had performed at the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta, where she sang “The Power of the Dream.”
