To make the deal more enticing, the Golden State Warriors gave the Miami Heat their 2025 first-round pick when they acquired Jimmy Butler. That pick would give the impression that it was top-10 protected.
When the Heat were about to select Kasparas Jakučionis from the University of Illinois with the 20th choice in the 2025 NBA Draft, that pick did, in fact, convey. Jakučionis, who was predicted by the most prominent mock drafts to be a late lottery pick, lost to Pat Riley and Erik Spoelstra in the final stages of the first round.
According to The Ringer’s J. Kyle Mann, who has, oddly, likened the 6’5″ guard to the Warriors’ own Brandin Podziemski, Jakučionis is a “high-feel orchestrator and playmaker who’ll provide rhythm and flow to whichever offense he joins.” The Heat made this selection as a result of their acquisition of Butler. It is yet unknown, though, if it will have a major effect next season or in the years to follow.
